Gordon Murray’s T.25: Here are the details

by Alex

Photos of the revolutionary Murray T25 city car by Gordon Murray T 25 have been released recently.

The photo depicts the Murray T25 to be a small vehicle by size. It can also be seen that the road footprint is also much smaller as compared to its rivals the Smart Fortwo and the Toyota iQ. The actual dimension of the car is 240cm long, 130cm wide and 140cm high. The three seater weighs 575 kg and is powered by a 660 cc three cylinder engine that is capable of delivering 51 bhp and 42 lb ft of torque. It is mated to a clutchless five speed transmission that makes the car capable of 0 to 100 kmph or 60 mph in 16.2 seconds while the top speed is 90 mph. fuel economy of the car is rates at 74 mpg while its fuel efficiency is 86 g/km.

Some of the remarkable features of the T25 are that it represents a major breakthrough in City car design. The designers have taken all aspects of strength, performance, weight, cost, safety, usability, tooling, quality, energy efficiency, recyclable and ease of assembly while bringing up this car. One can park this car at 90 degrees to the curb which is a unique benefit to the owner or driver of this car. One parallel parking space can accommodate up to three of these cars which leads to the advantage of lower parking space charges. There is also the advantage of increased traffic flow as two of these cars would be travelling and overtaking in one conventional lane.

Due to its dimensions there is the possibility of even triple lane usage at peak times. Due to lower usage of material for building the vehicle there is a positive impact towards environmental damage caused by other vehicles that use more material. The driving experience is in itself an enjoyable one due to the central driving position. This also gives rise to safety aspects of the vehicle and also ease in parking as the driver gets an overall view of the surrounding area of the car. The interior of the car also has the feasibility of providing better rear passenger leg room in case we opt for the single seater option with retrofit bolt-in rear seats.

The car has a unique door opening mechanism and traverse path. This permits for passengers of the car to alight even with the car parked at close proximity to other objects. Access to the car therefore is very easy for passengers and driver even if the car is car is parked two at a time in the garage. The lightweight design of the car helps in increased component life as also energy to drive the car is lesser and therefore a more fuel efficient car. The urban turning range of the car is 6 m which is a mark of its own again. The external body has been made of strips that are mechanically fixed to each other. This permits for easy replacement of only damaged strip in case of an accident. In all its genre this car also boasts of the best power to weight ration.

Mirror placement has been designed such that it becomes an integral part of the car as such. This saves the mirror from accidental damage which most other cars face due to their extended mirror design. The design incorporates features that make it extremely safe for pedestrians too. Formula 1 derived material has been used and this along with frame design makes the car a strong one called safety cell factor to sustain side as well as end on impacts.  The frame design has been based on “direct Load Path” technology. The car also is the first amongst its types to use lightweight material and low cost rear suspension.

A flat floor design has helped improve dynamics of the car. The turn indicators are of the highest standards and offers good visibility. Another unique feature is the fuel filler placed on either side of the car thereby making it possible to refuel from either side. The driving instrumentation panel has also been placed at the center which provides easy access to the driver.

Occupant capacity and ease of sitting has been achieved by good design of the internal layout. Even luggage carrying capacity of the car which is between 160 liter to 720 liter is above the other vehicles of similar genre. There are also six options for the internal seating layout and that can be adjusted in just 20 seconds. The makers have kept the cost in mind and set it low so that production can be of higher numbers. A true mark of the future is this car in terms of efficiency and low emissions.
